New City

A band of travelling gutterpunks led by the boisterous Sunday crash an annual tall bike joust at an off-the-grid urban DIY warehouse community. Sunday’s destructive behavior at the after-party is brought to heel by Jonas, the colony’s reticent leader, a legend of the 1990’s anti-globalism movement.

Pregnant young outsider Cherie is ecstatic that her parents have sent a substantial check to prepare for her baby’s arrival. But her baby-daddy won’t commit to her, so Cherie falls into Sunday’s orbit and treats his tribe to a night on the town that blows through most of her baby’s money.

The community’s firebrand, Dischordia, adopts Cherie, and at a house meeting the next day, convinces the residents to build a nursery in the currently filthy and hazardous warehouse. Grad student and sexual violence prevention activist Aimee hates the idea but has to leave for her job at a strip club.

The community’s mechanical whiz Jeote strikes up an awkward mentoring relationship with nine year-old DeShawn, one of six grandchildren raised by the warehouse’s disgruntled neighbor Miss Lilly. DeShawn can’t fully embrace the punk community and its ways, but neither is he comfortable in the rough street life of his brothers.

Dischordia plans a benefit show to raise money for the nursery, and master puppeteer Lilith constructs a set and elaborate puppets to tell an uncanny fairy tale about a princess, a forest, a village and a giant moth king. This dark story periodically intercuts with the story of the warehouse community.

Conflicts between Jonas and Aimee over his unwillingness to cede power to the community erupt in a powerful sexual chemistry. He thinks he’s found the perfect girfriend when, rolling on Ecstasy, she brings another dancer home for a threesome.

As aerialists, fire spinners, and acrobats perform on stage, Cherie escapes Dischordia’s watchful eye, relapses on alcohol and slips off with Sunday. Jonas catches Aimee in bed with an old flame, and suddenly polyamory doesn't sound so fun anymore. A spark onstage ignites an electrical fire which threatens to destroy the entire community.
